Massage Therapy

What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy uses different pressures, movements, and techniques to manipulate muscles and other soft tissues in the body, including muscles, connective tissues, tendons, ligaments, and joints. It aims at slowing down the nervous system; massage therapy can be used to release stress and tension, and provide relief from symptoms, heal injuries, and support wellness. Licensed health care professionals perform massage therapy. You should always consult a Registered Massage Therapist for your own well-being.

Massage therapy is effective in treating both acute and chronic conditions, and a wide range of patients with different illnesses, injuries, or disabilities.


Types of Massage Therapy

There are many different types of massage. Some of the most common massage therapies are listed below-

  • Swedish massage- This gentle massage uses long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration, and tapping. It helps with relaxation and stamina.
  • Deep massage- This technique uses slower, more forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues. It usually helps with muscle damage from injuries.
  • Sports massage- Similar to the Swedish massage, but it is intended for athletes and sports-person to help them prevent or repair injuries.
  • Trigger point massage- This massage focuses on areas of stiff and tight muscle fibers that can form in your muscles after injuries or overuse.

What to Expect?

In the first session, your massage therapist will evaluate your specific requirement and investigate your health history to assess the cause of the condition or discomfort. After assessing your needs, the therapist will prepare a treatment plan for you.
You should wear loose-fitting or baggy clothes for your massage therapy session. In Some cases, a patient might have to undress completely for the therapy, and in others, they do not have to at all. Your massage therapist should evaluate touch to locate painful or affected areas and to understand the amount of pressure required.
Your massage therapist can use oil or lotion, depending on your preference, to reduce friction on your skin. You must inform the therapist about your allergies, if any, before starting the therapy.
A Massage session can be around 10 to 90 minutes, depending on the type of massage and how much time you have. You must feel a sense of calm and relaxation, irrespective of the type of massage you choose. You should breathe normally during the massage session.
If your massage therapist is pushing too hard, ask them to apply a little less pressure. At times you can have a sensitive spot in a muscle that feels like a knot. You may feel uncomfortable while your therapist is working on you. Feel free to point it out to your therapist if it gets to the point of discomfort.
