It is a type of dizziness caused by disturbance in our inner ear. It is one of the most common causes of dizziness in adults, and often respond to physiotherapy treatment well.
However, there are many conditions that can mimic BPPV (BENIGN PAROXYSMAL POSITIONAL VERTIGO), such as cervicogenic dizziness, brainstem injury and neck artery injury.
There are a few little canals sitting in our inner year and form part of our balance system. They give information about head movement through space. In BPPV, little ear crystals get dislodged and fall into the wrong parts of the canals, giving inaccurate information about head movement. This results in dizziness.
The dizziness is usually aggravated by head moments, such as rolling over in bed or getting up from bed.
The crystals could be dislodged by head trauma, sudden head movements or related to ageing process.
Generally, the longer you have had the injury, the longer it will take to recover. Most of the time, you may assume things will get better by themselves with enough rest. But this is rarely the case, especially if your pain or other symptoms are stopping you from doing what you normally able to do. So, take action and get back doing what you love as soon as possible.
